What is SIBO?
SIBO, the term to describe a bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, has come a long way in the last few years.
The term SIBO is generally used when referring to an overgrowth of hydrogen-producing bacteria in the small intestine.
IMO (Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth), is an overgrowth of methane-producing Archaea, and can be found throughout the small and large intestine.
SIFO (Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth) is an overgrowth of fungi, usually Candida species, in the small intestine.
ISO (Intestinal Sulfide Overproduction) occurs when bacteria from the intestine are overproducing hydrogen sulfide gas. This is the least common form of SIBO.
It is possible to have more than one type and all of the above have a host of overlapping symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain, constipation and/or diarrhoea. If you suffer from IBS, then SIBO may be the actual underlying cause of your symptoms.
